Chwarae Teg Overview
Jane Hutt AM, the Minister for Finance and Leader of the House in the Welsh Government, led the establishment of Chwarae Teg in 1992.
Founded to support the economic development of Women in Wales, it employs over 50 people across Wales in roles that range from policy, research and training through to hands-on support to women and businesses in the Agile Nation project.
Supporting the economic development of women
Women make up more than half the population and 43% of the workforce, yet traditional ways of working mean that they are under-represented in senior positions and in many sectors of industry, hence the gender pay gap of 10.2%. Not only is this an equality issue, it just doesn’t make sense for our economy.
To further the progression of women in the workplace Chwarae Teg is developing four key focus areas:
- Supporting women into employment
- Flexible and sustainable working practices
- Women into enterprise
- Women’s retention and progression in work
Chwarae Teg wants to ensure that the ability to progress at work, the ability to choose a profession and the ability to be successful isn’t negatively affected by gender and that’s why Chwarae Teg works to progress the economic development of women.
Chwarae Teg in action
Chwarae Teg works at both strategic and operational levels, influencing policy and working directly with women and employers. This ensures it has an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the economic and workforce developments that impact on women and businesses.
It also allows the organisation to effectively challenge them through the development and delivery of projects.
At present Chwarae Teg rune the £12.5million European Social Fund and Welsh Government funded Agile Nation project which will influence the career prospects and working practices of 2790 women and 610 businesses.
